27/12/11 - Biometrics to change our lives in five years

IBM believes that biometrics – if they haven't already – will change our lives within the next five years.

The company's sixth annual "IBM 5 in 5" survey lists innovations that have the potential to change the way people work, live and interact during the next five years. The five to make the list and explanations follow:

People power will come to life
You will never need a password again
Mind reading is no longer science fiction
The digital divide will cease to exist
Junk mail will become priority mail

People power will come to life

Anything that moves or produces heat has the potential to create energy that can be captured. Walking. Jogging. Bicycling. The heat from your computer. Even the water flowing through your pipes.
Advances in renewable energy technology will allow individuals to collect this kinetic energy, which now goes to waste, and use it to help power our homes, offices and cities. Imagine attaching small devices to the spokes on your bicycle wheels that recharge batteries as you pedal along. You will have the satisfaction of not only getting to where you want to go, but at the same time powering some of the lights in your home. Created energy comes in all shapes and forms and from anything around us. IBM scientists in Ireland are looking at ways to understand and minimize the environmental impact of converting ocean wave energy into electricity.

You will never need a password again

Your biological makeup is the key to your individual identity, and soon, it will become the key to safeguarding it.You will no longer need to create, track or remember multiple passwords for various log-ins. Imagine you will be able to walk up to an ATM machine to securely withdraw money by simply speaking your name or looking into a tiny sensor that can recognize the unique patterns in the retinal of your eye. Or by doing the same, you can check your account balance on your mobile phone or tablet. Each person has a unique biological identity and behind all that is data. Biometric data – facial definitions, retina scans and voice files – will be composited through software to build your DNA unique online password. Referred to as multi-factor biometrics, smarter systems will be able to use this information in real-time to make sure whenever someone is attempting to access your information, it matches your unique biometric profile and the attempt is authorized. To be trusted, such systems should enable you to opt in or out of whatever information you choose to provide.

Mind reading is no longer science fiction

From Houdini to Skywalker to X-Men, mind reading has merely been "wishful thinking" for science fiction fans for decades, but their wish may soon come true. IBM scientists are among those researching how to link your brain to your devices, such as a computer or a smartphone. If you just need to think about calling someone, it happens. Or you can control the cursor on a computer screen just by thinking about where you want to move it.
Scientists in the field of bioinformatics have designed headsets with advanced sensors to read electrical brain activity that can recognize facial expressions, excitement and concentration levels, and thoughts of a person without them physically taking any actions. Within 5 years, we will begin to see early applications of this technology in the gaming and entertainment industry. Furthermore, doctors could use the technology to test brain patterns, possibly even assist in rehabilitation from strokes and to help in understanding brain disorders, such as autism.

The digital divide will cease to exist

In our global society, growth and wealth of economies are increasingly decided by the level of access to information. And in five years, the gap between information haves and have-nots will narrow considerably due to advances in mobile technology. There are 7 billion people inhabiting the world today. In five years there will be 5.6 billion mobile devices sold – which means 80% of the current global population would each have a mobile device.
As it becomes cheaper to own a mobile phone, people without a lot of spending power will be able to do much more than they can today. For example, in India, using speech technology and mobile devices, IBM enabled rural villagers who were illiterate to pass along information through recorded messages on their phones. With access to information that was not there before, villagers could check weather reports for help them decide when to fertilize crops, know when doctors were coming into town, and find the best prices for their crops or merchandise. Growing communities will be able to use mobile technology to provide access to essential information and better serve people with new solutions and business models such as mobile commerce and remote healthcare.

Junk mail will become priority mail

Think about how often we're flooded with advertisements we consider to be irrelevant or unwanted. It may not be that way for long. In five years, unsolicited advertisements may feel so personalized and relevant it may seem spam is dead. At the same time, spam filters will be so precise you'll never be bothered by unwanted sales pitches again. Imagine if tickets to your favorite band are put on hold for you the moment they became available, and for the one night of the week that is free on your calendar. Through alerts direct to you, you'll be able to purchase tickets instantly from your mobile device. Or imagine being notified that a snow storm is about to affect your travel plans and you might want to re-route your flight? IBM is developing technology that uses real-time analytics to make sense and integrate data from across all the facets of your life such as your social networks and online preferences to present and recommend information that is only useful to you. From news, to sports, to politics, you'll trust the technology will know what you want, so you can decide what to do with it.

Biometrics 2011 : a market perspective, use cases and best practices

In 2008 LSEC organized a one day seminar on status of Biometrics, its evolutions and applicability.
Three years later, the world has evolved again significantly, and more and more organizations are using fingerprint readers, iris-scanners and other biometric authentication technologies on a day to day basis.
Biometrics are being included in electronic ID cards, evolutions in high performance scanners, evolutions in further reducing false positives in finger scans up to video analytics, standards are being discussed, privacy concerns are increasing while biometric data are being sent over the internet, ….
The time is right to re-visit biometrics and get a perspective of the current state-of-the-art, and applicable solutions. How will biometrics be applied in the ever evolving mobile and virtualized world, will we be having a one single sign authentication, and how can privacy enhancing technologies be applied to biometric information.

The focus of the seminar will be to find out what the benefits, challenges and business models for applying biometrics could be, what specific applicable solutions might be presented in environments that could be challenging for other types of authentication technologies.
Could biometrics in 2011 be a solution for your situation?

19/11/11 - KNX and CHB Biometrics

In order to transfer control data to all building management components, a system is required that does away with the problems of isolated devices by ensuring that all components communicate via one common language: in short, a system such as the manufacturer and application domains independent KNX Bus. This standard is based upon more than 20 years of experience in the market.

Via the KNX medium to which all bus devices are connected (twisted pair, radio frequency, power line or IP/Ethernet), they are able to exchange information. Bus devices can either be sensors or actuators needed for the control of building management equipment such as: lighting, blinds / shutters, security systems, energy management, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, signaling and monitoring systems, interfaces to service and building control systems, remote control, metering, audio / video control, white goods, etc.

All these functions can be controlled, monitored and signaled via a uniform system without the need for extra control centers.

Celadon Hailstone Biometrics provides a biometric link to the KNX protocol via the YBi scanner line. Fingers enter into domotics !

04/07/11 - The time has come for biometrics to come out of the closet

Citigroup Inc. revealed on June 9th that computer hackers breached the bank's network and accessed the data of over 200,000 bank card holders in North America, including their names, account numbers and contact information. On Friday June 17th it was reported that the actual breach affected more than 360,000 customers. This is just one of many breaches that have taken place in 2011.
The U.S. Secret Service recently determined the number of data breaches in the U.S. and they found that the number of breaches in 2010 was 141 and there have already been 761 in 2011. The increase in activity is staggering.

The time has come for biometrics to come out of the closet and take center stage.
Why is it so important to embrace this new technology? Most infrastructures that process our transactions in the enterprise world (e.g. online banking, etc.) are secured by technologies that breach us. Hackers are becoming smarter each day; they can be around the world and cyber-accessing your personal information.
A majority of people worldwide use online or Internet banking to pay bills and monitor their accounts. As technology and new devices advance, our cyber security needs to advance as well. Worldwide shipments of app-enabled devices such as Smartphone's and iPads will reach 284 million by the end of this year. By 2012, the number is expected to reach 462
million devices shipped. The iPhone is being deployed or tested by 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies and the iPad is being deployed or tested by 60% of the Fortune 100.
Mobile banking is a fastgrowing trend. It is predicted that by 2015, 50% or more of U.S. mobile users will be conducting transactions from their mobile devices. While this new technology allows greater access and opportunity for consumers, it also leaves them vulnerable to cyber security attacks. Instead of using passwords, pins and tokens, which have proven to be unsecure and ineffective, CHB offers finger biometric technology (id-me) to replace outdated methods like passwords and tokens.

24/12/10 - Most organizations using Biometrics leave sound IT Access Protection at the door

According to new research from Siemens IT Solutions and Services, only 18 percent of organizations with biometric measures currently in place are using them for logical access control -- vital to securing IT equipment and data files.

"Biometrics may be perceived as innovative and thus costly but this is not the case, indeed business cases show a rapid payback on initial investment," continues Ian  Collard, Identity Management, and Biometrics Manager at Siemens IT Solutions and Services. "IT helpdesks often observe that the most common reason for user calls is password resets-a task which has been calculated to cost an organization upwards of £70 a time, when all the human and process stages have been taken into account."

Collard says by implementing innovative user identification using biometric palm-vein, fingerprint, or even voice recognition, costs can be halved, pressure on the helpdesk reduced and organizational efficiencies gained. Biometrics technology is a crucial tool in today's business armory.

26/11/10 - School buses test fingerprint scan

School districts are turning to high-tech solutions such as fingerprint scans to track kids on school buses and keep them from getting off at the wrong stops. Unlike the automated fingerprint identification systems used in law enforcement the fingerprint images are not stored. The fingerprints are converted into a series of numbers that cannot be used to re-create a fingerprint. These systems insure privacy and since you are dealing with such a small database, accuracy is not compromised. The system will insure that an accurate picture of when and where the children boarded and left the bus. The system also insures the children get off at their designated stop with an alarm that will sound alerting the bus driver if the child tries to depart at the wrong stop. The equipment today is small and can easily be adapted to a bus and not add any additional time requirements boarding or departing the bus. The drivers are not required to do anything with the equipment everything is automated.
Some additional thoughts on what could and should be incorporated in a school bus biometric system:
Consideration should be given to use biometrics to make the school buses more secure, requiring a fingerprint in order to enter and start the school bus. Most parking bus parking lots have little or no security, requiring drivers and staff to utilize a fingerprint to allow access to the area would certainly be beneficial. Most modes of transportation have seen an increase in security but the school bus industry has not and actually is quite vulnerable. Utilizing biometrics would be a good 1st. step in securing everyone’s safety.
A biometric system could be adapted to monitor how well the driver meets schedule requirements or a way to document maintenance on the vehicle.

13/11/10 - California University Campus Reports 300% Return On Investment After First Year Of Using Biometric Technology

Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. reported today that it has realized a 300% return on investment in biometric technology during the first year of deployment. It has implemented biometric fingerprint technology with its time and attendance software, enabling employees to use fingerprint readers to clock in and clock out at the beginning and end of shifts and lunch breaks.

Cal Poly Pomona Foundation identified several time and attendance challenges which led them to implement biometric fingerprint technology. The problems included backlogs during check-in/check-out, decreases in payroll staff productivity to reconcile time stamp errors and buddy punching. It was seeking to incorporate a biometric check-in/check-out interface that eliminated backlogs and sped up the process to decrease lost employee productivity.

After implementing biometric technology, Cal Poly Pomona Foundation estimates at least 10 employment service staff hours saved per pay cycle by eliminating the need for supervisors to authorize hours in the system after processing. This equates to 10 hours per cycle, 20 hours per month and approximately 240 hours per year which they have been able to allocate to other projects and initiatives. They estimate savings of $15,000 per year through a $5,000 investment in biometric technology.

About Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc.
Established in 1966, the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. is an integral component for the educational mission of the University. The Foundation exists to provide the highest level of service and financial support while maintaining corporate fiscal integrity.

15/10/10 - Two-Thirds of consumers like credit card verification by fingerprint

A new poll by Unisys Corporation has revealed that consumers trust fingerprint biometrics over photo identification, PIN numbers or handwritten signatures to verify their identities when using a credit card or requesting personal information. The results seem to indicate an increasing consumer acceptance of biometric technologies to secure financial transactions and combat identity fraud.

Responding to the question, "Which do you believe is the safest method to prove your credit card is being used by you?" the online poll found that 63 percent of more than 300 respondents preferred fingerprints as the best method for identity verification and authentication as compared to photo identification (20 percent), PIN numbers (13 percent) and handwritten signatures (six percent).

"As we move to an increasingly digital era, traditional methods of identity verification will no longer be sufficient," said Bryan Ichikawa, vice president of identity solutions, Unisys. "As our poll shows, biometric identification is a valid and preferred method of identity authentication which could prove valuable in a variety of fields even beyond banking such as in healthcare and transportation security."

This online poll of 305 respondents was fielded between September 20 and October 4, 2010.

These findings complement results of the April 2010 Unisys Security Index which revealed similar findings in most countries surveyed. For example, the Unisys Security Index found that 93 percent of Americans are willing to supply a biometric to increase physical safety at airports. Sixty-five percent of Americans responded they would cooperate with full electronic body scans at the airport and 55 percent would be willing to submit to identity checks using biometric data such as iris scans or fingerprints.

17/08/10 - Will BlackBerry 6 Use Fingerprint scanning?

The inevitable merge of biometrics and smart phones continues to draw closer. Word on the street is that the BlackBerry OS 6 looks like there might be fingerprint scanning. RIM had included APIs for biometrics back in OS 5, but apparently, they were for accessory manufacturers. "Native fingerprint scanning would be a perfect fit for BlackBerry, which is obsessively focused on security, and a quickswipe would be a lot easier than punching in a PIN code every time you want to unlock your device," says this writer. The LG eXpo is the only recent handset out there that offers fingerprint scanning, but was aimed at enterprise. If the feature is included and implemented seamlessly into the BlackBerry experience that many are already familiar with, chances are it will probably breakthrough.

16/07/10 - Fingerprint in childcare facilities

The system at Doodlebug requires each parent to register with their children. Their fingerprint is scanned and recorded, and they also come up with a unique password. A child cannot be dropped off, or more importantly, picked up without both identifiers. "The only people that can get through the door are the people that have already registered with us," Assistant Director Erin Higginbotham said. "Parents that come in to tour are always very appreciative of that, knowing that not just anybody can come in and pick their child up, which shouldn't happen anyway, but they're not going to get buy us as easy," Higginbotham said.

02/07/10 - Biometrics Secure Socceroo Fans in Durban

Fingerprint scanning gates were used by tour group, the Fanatics, to control entry and exit (but apparently not Australia's exit from World Cup competition) to the Durban Cricket Ground, which has been converted into a "tent city" for approximately 1200 Socceroos, Australian soccer fans, during the World Cup in South Africa. South Africa is generally perceived as a dangerous country, which was one of the factors that led the Fanatics site manager Phil VB to opt for biometric entrance gates. Six fingerprint scanners were rented from a local supplier for the duration of the World Cup. When the soccer tent city residents arrived, their fingerprints and photographs were added to the system, which already contained theirpassport details and corresponding local address.

School Library Uses Fingers Instead of Cards

A Manchester UK primary school is testing out a scheme, where children as young as four years old scan their fingerprints as ID for checking books in and out of the school's library.
To check out a book, students swipe a barcode placed inside the book at a computer station, which then asks for them to press their thumb on a fingerprint scanner. Books are checked back into the library the same way: no library card or identification required. School officials say the fingerprints are converted to and saved as digital electronic codes that are recognized by the computer, so that no actual fingerprint images are kept on file or shared.

Biometric Barista Prepares Coffee with a Swipe

Leave it to the Italians to use biometrics in a very practical way -- albeit, at a hefty price. The Xelsis Digital ID coffee machine can record the fingerprints of up to six individuals, before storing their unique coffee preferences into an internal database to accessed via their biometric identification. Each individual need only swipe their fingertip across the in-built reader to get their favorite coffee just the way they like it -- no other interaction is required. Saeco is aiming the Xelsis firmly at the luxury end of the market that is willing to drop $2,500 for a custom cup of coffee at the swipe of a finger.

Seoul Hospital Searching for Better Protection

Seoul National University Hospital in Korea found there were many cases where some employees who have terminated their employment did not properly return the RFID cards to the HR management office, and those unreturned cards were often misused by others. As a result, out of about 2,000 people working in the CRI building, the management office was not able to track almost 5-600 people. To protect their intellectual properties, people and expensive medical equipment, they decided they were in critical need for a security upgrade to a biometrics system, which effectively eliminates the possibility of fraudulent access using others' credentials, as it requires biometric features of the entrant only specific to that individual.

13/01/10 - Nieuwe speelhal Oosterhout is 'cool!'
